Connect Concordia mentorship program
The program connects undergraduate student mentees with Concordia staff, faculty, or graduate student mentors.
Mentees will explore the professional life of a Concordia staff member, learn about their mentor’s career paths, and experience a real-life work environment. They can discuss their own projects, academic goals, and professional goals while improving their professional communication skills.
Equity deserving students will receive a $140 participation award upon completion! Equity deserving students include: International students, newcomers and refugees, Students with disabilities, Black students, Indigenous students, People of colour and students of racialized groups, members of the LGBTQ2S+, parents and caregivers.
Why be a mentor?
Do you remember a teacher, coach or former supervisor who had a part in shaping your path? This is your chance to do that for someone else. Mentoring can instigate positive change in a student’s life all while you hone your coaching and leadership skills and learn more about this generation of students.
You can invite your mentee to a meeting or presentation, take them on a tour of your lab, and show them what you’re working on. You can also discuss your career path, their goals and offer supportive advice. This unique observational internship will allow students to be mentored all while learning more about your impact at Concordia.
The program will connect you to an undergraduate student for about 10 hours of mentoring over the course of a term (schedule to be determined by both parties) online or in person.
How the program works
- Applications are accepted three times a year before each new term.
- The application is brief. You'll provide a short bio to help students choose their mentor.
- Mentees choose their preferred mentors from the pool of available staff members within the first 3 or 4 weeks of the term.
- We will introduce you to your mentee via email. You’ll arrange your meetings (online or in-person).
- Review the "Planning for the mentorship experience" and “Suggested mentoring activities” documents available below.
- Identify interesting opportunities for the student. Will you be giving a presentation they can assist? Can they tour your office or labs and meet your colleagues?
- Get to know each other’s academic and career histories, goals and expectations.
- Use the available resources to help define expectations, set goals and choose suitable activities. Every mentorship experience is unique!
- Clarify what you can and cannot provide, such as coaching versus mental health counseling.
- Fill out the feedback form to help us improve our program.
- Advise us that your mentee has completed 10-hours of mentoring related activities.
- Equity deserving students will receive a $140 award upon completing the program once their mentor confirms the hours.
- The program coordinator will reach out periodically via email.
- Do not hesitate to reach out with questions or comments to campus.exl@concordia.ca
