The Struggle for Women's Rights in Iran: A discussion with human rights hero Shaparak Shajarizadeh

The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies, in partnership with the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, will host Iranian activist Shaparak Shajarizadeh.

Iranian officials arrested Shajarizadeh in Tehran in late February 2018 for removing her headscarf to protest compulsory hijab laws and sentenced her to 20 years in prison. She is now living in exile in Canada. Named one of the 100 inspiring and influential women from around the world for 2018 by BBC, Shajarizadeh has become one of the leading figures of women’s rights in Iran and is currently seeking asylum in Canada.

This event is part of the official programming of Women in International Security — Canada’s 2018 16 Days Campaign for the elimination of gender-based violence. Aimed to raising awareness at the local, national and international levels, the campaign bolsters local projects working on issues of violence against women, provides a forum for effective strategy and knowledge-sharing, demonstrates the solidarity of women and creates tools to pressure governments to implement policies aimed at eliminating violence against women.
