Concordia-Vietnam event brings researchers together to discuss latest trends in sustainable development
Concordia – Vietnam: Building Partnerships Toward a Sustainable Future spotlighted the valuable contributions made by Concordia-based and Vietnamese researchers to sustainable development across crucial domains while identifying prospects for future collaborations. The university hosted the initiative at the J.W. McConnell Building on December 12.
Like Concordia, the country of Vietnam has demonstrated steadfast commitments to education and sustainable development. It has solidified its stature as a hub for innovation and sustainability research within Southeast Asia.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between Canada and Vietnam. Concordia President Graham Carr says he sees the occasion as an opportunity to look to the future.
“There is no more urgent global issue than the climate crisis,” he notes.
“Nationally, Canada and Vietnam have both made strong commitments to sustainability, energy efficiency and decarbonization. This initial dialogue was about identifying the strongest synergies between our areas of expertise and putting in place concrete next steps for the coming months and years.”
Researchers from Concordia and Vietnamese institutions engaged in discussions around the most pertinent trends in sustainable development. With a particular focus on energy, water and next-generation cities, the event was a step toward the collaborators’ long-term goal: to strengthen enduring foreign partnerships that will drive sustainable progress.
For Thien Khanh Tran, head of the Sciences Technology and International Affairs Office at Dong Nai Technology University in Vietnam, potential partnerships with Concordia would provide Vietnamese researchers with strong research experiences in the areas of sustainable development and future technologies.
“A connection between Concordia University and Vietnam would create opportunities for international cooperation in fundamental research and pilot projects that will benefit both our countries’ move to a greener and more prosperous future for all,” he says.
