The Student Learning and Professional Development (SLPD) team provides training and support to prepare your leap into the workplace, giving you a competitive edge.

At the Institute, we show you how to research and apply for work term positions and give you the support you need to succeed in the classroom during your work term.

As an Institute student, you'll have access to:

  • An orientation session
  • Career preparation seminars
  • Professional development workshops, including Excel and French-language training
  • Access to think-cell, a chart and layout software for Powerpoint
  • Career and academic counselling services
  • Peer mentors
  • Special events including a speaker series

During my time as a member of the institute, the Institute’s Career Fundamentals gave me the knowledge and abilities I needed to successfully navigate the challenges of the job market and lay a solid foundation for my career.

Mentorship at the Institute

Institute students and staff who are part of the mentorship program

At the Institute, new students can connect with experienced peers through our Institute mentorship initiative. Our mentors are experienced students who provide support with studying, job applications and how to succeed in your first internship.

Student mentors at the Institute will earn co-curricural credit, build connections and learn coaching and other soft skills. If you're a mentee, you'll get support for adjusting to university life, finding internships and tips to succeed in academics and professional opportunities.

Institute students also have access to a student-run, peer-to-peer mentorship channel called Co-op Institute - Peer to Peer Learning Community on MS Teams. On this channel, fellow students share information about events and activities of interest to Institute students, from coffee chats to discussions about diversity and inclusivity in the workplace.
