Concordia community comes together for a successful April Sugar Shack fundraiser

This spring saw 305 Concordia community members donning their finest plaid shirts and eagerly anticipating the sweet delights of maple taffy at the annual Sugar Shack event. Hospitality Concordia hosted the popular gathering at three separate sittings at the Loyola and Sir George Williams campuses on April 10 and 11.

This year’s Sugar Shack surpassed expectations and previous attendance numbers. Participants had a delightful, shared experience while raising an impressive $2,462 for the Student Emergency Meal Plan program.

Community support

“We are thrilled to see the community come together and support a great cause at the same time,” says Petra Alves-Noonan, one of the organizers.

“A standout of this event was seeing 48 students receive a free, hearty lunch donated by community members. It’s a clear example of how community efforts hit home, especially for students dealing with food struggles.”

Food services manager Oliver de Volpi’s baked sugar pies added a sweet touch to the event. He sourced ingredients through donations to ensure that 100 per cent of the proceeds could go toward the fundraising cause.

“This event is not just about enjoying delicious food — it’s about extending a helping hand to those in need,” de Volpi says.

Future events

The success of this year’s Sugar Shack has paved the way for future community endeavours, with plans already underway for next year’s edition.

“We are excited to continue organizing events that bring the community together and make a positive impact,” adds Sarah Dorrell-Caille, director of Hospitality Concordia.

Sugar Shack attendees can fill out a feedback form until May 23. Organizers hope to use the results to cater future events to the preferences and needs of the community.
