The captain of Concordia’s men’s hockey team, Olivier Hinse, has earned one of Canadian university’s top honours, the 2014-15 Dr. Randy Gregg Award.

Presented to Hinse at the CIS All-Canadian Gala dinner in Halifax on March 11, the award recognizes the Canadian Interuniversity Sport player who best combines outstanding hockey ability, academic achievement and community involvement. Hinse one of the top performers in the CIS this season, is the first Stinger to win this award.

A native of Sherbrooke, Hinse joined the Stingers in 2012 after playing four seasons in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He became the first player under head coach Kevin Figsby to be named an assistant captain in his first year.

“That’s just a tribute to his leadership, his work ethic and his commitment,” says Figsby. “He's probably one of the best leaders we've ever had in the program.”

This season, Hinse scored 18 goals and 13 assists. He also led the country with four shorthanded goals. Off the ice, Hinse maintains a 3.17 GPA in Child Studies and has been active in community projects including coaching a junior AAA team. He also works part-time at Reebok-CCM Hockey as a field testing assistant.

Inagurated in the 1990-91 season, the Dr. Randy Gregg Award is named after the former captain of the University of Alberta Golden Bears, who went on to win five Stanley Cups with the Edmonton Oilers. Gregg was also the captain of the 1980 and 1988 Canadian Olympic teams.
