Academic accommodations for affected classes

A message from the provost and vice-president of Academic Affairs

I want to thank, once again, all members of the university community for their dignity, understanding and resilience in responding to yesterday’s events.

In light of the disruptions to academic activities caused by the events of 1 March I ask that all faculty members make appropriate accommodations for students whose classes were disrupted. Specifically, I ask professors whose courses or related activities were scheduled in the Hall, EV and GM buildings at any point from 11:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., to ensure that alternative arrangements are made for students with respect to any graded work – e.g. papers, presentations, tests, exams, lab assignments, etc. – that might have been due at those times. Although the university resumed all activities in the affected buildings beginning at 18h, some public reports issued during the day may legitimately have left some individuals with the impression that the university was closed for the rest of the day.

If professors have any questions about their options with respect to academic accommodations, we ask that they contact the office of their faculty dean. If students have any questions, we ask that they contact their professor or department chair.

Equally, we recognize that yesterday’s events may have been difficult for some students and other members of our community. The university has extended to our entire community security and counselling services that are available to provide individual support:

  • Students can contact Counselling and Psychological Services at 514-848-2424, ext. 3545 (SGW) or ext. 3555 (LOY), and Health Services at ext. 3565 (SGW) and ext. 3575 (LOY)
  • Faculty and staff can reach out to our Employee Assistance Program at Homewood Health at 1-800-663-1142.
  • If you see anything you believe is suspicious activity on campus, or you do not feel safe, please contact our Security Department at 514-848-3717.
