Elisa Gallot

Supervisor: Andrea Hunter

Elisa Gallot is a multidisciplinary artist and graduate student in the Digital Innovation in Journalism MA program at Concordia University. She completed her BA in Communication and Political Science at the University of Montreal, where she developed an interest in feminist and queer theory, as well as a passion for visual storytelling through photography and video.

Elisa’s research-creation thesis focuses on the intensifying persecution of queer individuals in Russia, particularly in light of the increase of anti-LGBTQ+ laws passed in the country. Through a photojournalistic series of portraits combined with written interviews, her project aims to portray the narratives of queer Russians being silenced in an increasingly repressive environment. With a personal connection to her topic, Elisa approaches this study as a collaborative process with each participant. She aims to build trusting relationships that allow her to portray their experiences respectfully while protecting their identities and honoring their stories.

Thesis title: "Documenting the experiences of Russian queer individuals amid rising anti-LGBTQ+ legislation"
