Thesis title: Daoist Ritual Music
Karl is currently pursuing a M.A. in Religions and Cultures at Concordia University.
He completed a B.A. at Concordia University with a major in Religions and Cultures, a minor in history, and a minor in modern Chinese.
His research focuses on Daoist ritual practices, the use of music in Daoist rituals, and forms of religious expressions within Daoism.
With his professional background as an audio engineer, he wishes to participate in the future in ethnomusicological recordings of Daoist ritual music around China, Taiwan, and within various Chinese diasporic communities.
His other academic interests include Chinese philosophy, history of religion, Chinese classic literature, and the decolonizing of music theory.
He spent several months in Taiwan doing ethnographic research investigating the religious life around the island. During his time abroad, he was able to witness various forms of religious expressions, different ritual practices, and interact with members of Daoist communities.
