Edmond (Edo) Ernest dit Alban will be joining Tulane University’s Communication Department and Asian Studies’ program as an Assistant Professor from Fall 2022

Edmond (Edo) Ernest dit Alban holds a cotutelle PhD in Moving Image Studies and Communication studies from Concordia University and Paris Vincennes-Saint-Denis University. Edo’s research generally tackles the boundaries between transmedia, anime, game, and gender studies. Their involvement with female and queer fandoms in Tokyo, Paris, and Montreal has led ethnographic inquiries including pedestrian interviews, urban media mapping, and critical media mix histories. Edo’s published work therefore address a wide spectrum of questions from Japanese transmedia’s urban history (Pedestrian Media Mix: The Birth of Otaku Sanctuaries in Tokyo, Mechademia Journal 2020), methods to study gay manga (Towards a Queer Perspective on Manga History: Sexy Stillness in Yamakawa Jun’ichi’s Art, Dôjin Journal 2020), as well as epistemological reflections on the state of fans studies in Japan (Imagining Diversity: Mapping the Potentials and Limits of Queer Otaku Theory, Mechademia Journal 2022). Edo was periodically teaching at McGill University’s East Asian Studies Department since 2019, but had the honor to join Tulane University’s Communication Department and Asian Studies’ program as an Assistant Professor from Fall 2022.
