Rachel Webb Jekanowski

Rachel Webb Jekanowski is an interdisciplinary scholar working between film and media studies and the environmental/energy humanities. Rachel is an Assistant Professor of English at Memorial University's Grenfell Campus, and a former Banting Postdoctoral Fellow at Memorial's St. John's Campus. Her current book project, Cinemas of Extraction: Land, Resources, Settler Imaginaries, examines environmental and colonial entanglements of 20th-century nontheatrical and documentary filmmaking in Canada and the United States. Recent publications include journal articles on nontheatrical filmmaking, science, and infrastructure studies in Canadian Journal of Communication and Canadian Journal of Film Studies; the book chapter "Contested and Emergent Futures: Film and Energy Regimes of the Newfoundland Offshore" in Cold Water Oil: Offshore Petroleum Cultures (Routledge, 2022); and Solarities: Seeking Energy Justice (University of Minnesota Press, 2022), written as a member of the After Oil Collective.
