My practice is an ongoing performance; my daily life and my projects are very close and intertwined. I draw inspiration from my interactions with people to create work. My videos and photographs reflect my discomfort in relating to other people. I use an autofictional approach in my projects, which are meant to be humorous and satirical of popular culture and everyday life. I use the facial expressions and appearance of different characters to explore the concept of identity. All of my work to date is about identity and relationships with others. I provoke encounters. Whether I use photography or performance, I need to invade the space of others to better understand them and test their limits, as well as my own.
Born in Montreal, Laurence Poirier holds a Bachelor's degree in Photography from Concordia University. After exploring a more commercial career, she is now interested in slowing things down and taking the time to reflect on artistic expression.
