Joanie Da Costa

Photography

Drawing from family documents and traces of her daily life , Joanie transforms these materials into nearly unrecognizable forms, intertwining them with poetry to blur the boundaries between documentation and emotion. She experiments with analog photography and video installation, using handmade optical tools such as pinhole cameras to manipulate light and time. These alterations reflect how external and internal forces—time, emotions, places, and objects—shape and weather memory. Her work becomes a meditation on the fleeting, ever-changing nature of what we remember or what gradually surrenders to forgetting.

Joanie Da Costa is a Montreal-based emerging artist specializing in photography and installations. She has a Bachelor’s in Visual and Media Arts from UQÀM, where she earned the 2023 McAbbie Foundation Photography Award. Joanie's work has been showcased in several group exhibitions, including  Paramètres XXII (2023). Beyond her artistic practice, she has contributed to Montreal’s art scene through internships and professional projects, such as video creation for CIRCA Art Actuel.
