Concordia capstone project and Co-Op opportunities gave Adrian Clarizio engaging university experience

Adrian Clarizio loves his job: the construction site supervisor for CIMA+ has worked on many important projects in Montreal, including on the Bonaventure Expressway and the iconic Jacques Cartier Bridge.

Adrian graduated with distinction from Concordia’s civil engineering program with a specialization in civil infrastructure — was the recipient of the 2013 Harry and Grace Colle Scholarship, and was named to the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science Dean’s List in 2013 and 2015.

What was the best part about your program?

I knew from a young age that I wanted to be an engineer and I chose Concordia because it is a very practical university. The best part was the capstone project at the end of our studies. We took everything we learned over the previous three years and applied it to an A-to-Z project in one class over two semesters. I thought that was the most engaging part of the program, designing something related to your field.

What were some of the highlights of your Concordia experience?

There were engineering nights on Fridays that I enjoyed getting involved with, but I mostly focused on my studies.

I was also a member of the Institute for Co-operative Education, which mixes university experience with work experience. Some semesters we would go on internships — mine were at Examine Construction Consultants and Deloitte, doing project management in the construction field. That work experience was invaluable.

I also got into the Golden Key International Honour Society in my first year. Golden Key recognizes students that do well academically and connects you with grads and teachers.

Any advice for current students?

Get involved as much as possible in extra-curricular activities and programs like Co-op, because they will give you an edge over others.
