The Irish Civil War: History and Memory in Conflict

Important Note: The St. Patrick’s Society Lecture will be the School of Irish Studies’ first public event since lockdown.  Given the ongoing public health situation, attendees must register through Eventbrite, and seating will be limited.  All attendees are strongly encouraged to wear a mask. Biography: 

Gavin Foster is Associate Professor of Irish history at Concordia. His book, The Irish civil war and society: politics, class, and conflict, was awarded the American Conference for Irish Studies’ 2015 ‘James S. Donnelly, Sr. Prize for Books on History and Social Sciences’. He has published chapters, articles and essays on the Irish revolutionary period in 'The Atlas of the Irish Revolution'; 'Kerry: History and Society'; Field Day Review; Saothar: Journal of the Irish Labour History Society; Éire-Ireland: Journal of Irish Studies; New Hibernia Review; History Ireland; and the Revolution Papers project, among others. He is presently writing a book about the social memory and legacies of the Irish Civil War based on extensive oral history interviews and local fieldwork.  For a newspaper article Dr. Foster wrote as part of the National Irish Civil War Conference held at University College Cork this past summer, click here.
