Elections in the United States: Implications for Canada and North America

Laura Macdonald (Carleton University)

Friday October 25th, 2024

Hall Building H-1220

12:30-2:00PM

The stakes are high for Canada and the North American region as the United States heads to the polls on November 5th. Donald Trump has said he will renegotiate the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). Meanwhile Canada faces an election in the near future, while Mexico has recently elected its first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum. This presentation will explore the implications of a Trump or Biden presidency for Canada, Mexico, and the North American region.

Laura Macdonald is Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Political Science and at the Institute of Political Economy at Carleton University. She has published numerous books and articles on the role of NGOs in development, global civil society, citizenship struggles, Canadian development assistance, and the political impact of NAFTA. She is a regular media commentator and is a member of the McLeod Group, a group of academics and development professionals working to advance Canadian policy and action in international cooperation and foreign affairs.
