Join us for the launch of the book Defund: Conversations Towards Abolition (Haymarket Books, 2024), a collection of interviews with abolitionist organizers and thinkers that considers how #defund can bridge the divide between reform and abolition, becoming a catalyst to help organizers realize abolitionist visions.
The book launch will feature an author talk by Dr. Calvin John Smiley, in conversation with Freeman from the Termite Collective, followed by a Q&A.
About the speaker: Calvin John Smiley is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Hunter College-City University of New York (CUNY). Smiley is the author of Purgatory Citizenship, published by University of California Press. His writing has appeared in the Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment, The Prison Journal, and Punishment & Society, and his research has been featured in the Washington Post, the Guardian, Toronto Star, and Le Monde. Outside of writing, Smiley works with incarcerated youth and young men in New York City. He lives in Queens, New York.
