International Migration and the Brain drain-Brain gain Debate: Lebanon as a case study

In this study, I explore the phenomenon of brain drain, i.e., the migration of highly skilled and highly educated people from less developed countries to the more developed ones. I begin by presenting a brief worldview of this phenomenon. Later, I touch briefly on Arab emigration of that category of migrants, but my focus will be on Lebanon. My study covers three main issues: worldwide migration and the brain drain debate focusing on OECD countries, Arab migration, and Lebanon’s emigration dilemma and its consequences. I collected my data from several international sources as well as Lebanese ones during my recent visit to Lebanon in the Summer of 2023.

Biography

Prof. Hussein Merhi, a senior lecturer at the Sociology & Anthropology Department, has taught different subjects in Sociology, particularly research methods & statistics. Dr. Merhi has conducted research on the issue of migration of highly skilled people from less developed countries to more developed ones, and the impact on both the sending and receiving countries, all within the framework of globalization.
