Overview
An account of a journey from engineering to the law, highlighting the unique perspective engineers bring to AI regulation.
A discussion on the status of the critically important proposed AI and Data Act (AIDA, Part 3 of Bill C-27) that is currently before parliamentary committee, and how an engineer’s voice can inform workable policy and regulation.
Lastly, drawing from his work with AI companies, the conference speaker will discuss the prospects for young engineers building AI companies, addressing legal hurdles (including compliance with AIDA) and opportunities, and close off with what he wished he knew earlier in his career as a professional engineer and lawyer working with engineers.
Students in the Gina Cody School of Engineering and Computer Science, lawyers, and the general public are invited to attend.

Concordia Jurist-in-Residence Morton Minc is hosting a series of law-related lectures given by prominent speakers geared to all Gina Cody School students. These lectures will tackle topics that will be very useful in their professional lives.
Biography
Sam Ip is Partner at Osler and a member of the Technology Group. that regularly works with artificial intelligence companies or organizations making use of artificial intelligence technologies. His practice also includes technology procurement, contracting, and other commercial and corporate matters, with a significant focus on advising clients on complex and thorny issues related to the use of data, blockchain technology and, open source software.
Mr. Ip is also a Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT), a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals, a licensed professional engineer and a former engineer at BlackBerry, which provides a technical foundation from which to draw upon when advising clients.
