The Gossip Monger [Social practice artwork] as part of the exhibition "paper_work.doc"

A durational artwork addressing the dynamic of gossip in the office environment. In it, the GM, aka maya rae oppenheimer, shall receive gossip contributions to explore how it can save, insinuate, warn, harm, and educate. These will be transcribed in a registry of handmade paper.

Workers rely on gossip and gossip thrives when working. This is not always a commensal relationship: gossip can save, insinuate, warn, harm, and educate, sometimes simultaneously. “The Gossip Monger” (GM, aka maya rae oppenheimer) is a durational artwork that welcomes participants to share their gossip in a context of trust and collaboration. Using helpful texts such as Beginners Business English and The Book of English Proverbs, the GM and donor will transcribe coded language onto handmade goldenrod paper, which has poisonous, self-healing properties appropriate for this application. The GM will then enclose the gossip in handmade rhubarb paper envelopes—a medicine that combats indigestion and malaise—reinforced with a beeswax seal. Participants are invited to return to the exhibition to collect an envelope from the gossip registry and ultimately decide whether they break the seal and set the gossip free.

Materials:

Donated gossip, handmade paper (rhubarb, goldenrod, abaca pulp), walnut ink, time, wood, persistence, raffle tickets, wax, vicarious trust, various books on “business English”.

Bio:

maya rae oppenheimer (phd) is the founder and co-director of OK Stamp Press. She’s also a daughter, sister, aunt, plant-mother of Icelandic and Canary Islander descent who receives joy and financial remuneration as an artist/writer/researcher/educator. She was born in Treaty 1 territory and spent over a decade living in London (UK). maya is now an uninvited guest on Kanien’kehá:ka territory where she preoccupies herself with art and book-making as social practice. Experimental writing, performance, radical pedagogy, open-access publishing, DIY tactics and rogue archival gestures make up her tool-kit. maya joined the Faculty of Fine Arts at Concordia University September 2017 as Assistant Professor in the Department of Art History and is now based in the Department of Studio Arts. She holds a PhD in Humanities and Cultural Studies from the University of London, an MA from the Royal College of Art, and lots of flowers. Artist website under perpetual construction.

À l'aide de textes utiles tels que Beginners Business English et The Book of English Proverbs, le GM et le donateur transcrivent un langage codé sur du papier fait à la main à base de verge d'or, qui possède des propriétés vénéneuses et autoguérisseuses appropriées à cette application. La GM inclura ensuite les potins dans des enveloppes en papier faites à la main à base de rhubarbe - un médicament qui combat l'indigestion et le malaise - renforcées par un sceau en cire d'abeille. Les participants sont invités à revenir à l'exposition pour récupérer une enveloppe du registre des potins et décider finalement s'ils brisent le sceau et libèrent le potin.

Bio:

maya rae oppenheimer (phd) est la fondatrice et la codirectrice de OK Stamp Press. Elle est aussi une fille, une sœur, une tante, une mère-plante d'origine islandaise et canarienne qui reçoit de la joie et une rémunération financière en tant qu'artiste/écrivaine/chercheuse/éducatrice. Elle est née sur le territoire du traité n° 1 et a vécu plus de dix ans à Londres (Royaume-Uni). Maya est aujourd'hui une invitée sans invitation sur le territoire de Kanien'kehá:ka, où elle se préoccupe de l'art et de la création de livres en tant que pratiques sociales. L'écriture expérimentale, la performance, la pédagogie radicale, la publication en libre accès, les tactiques de bricolage et les gestes d'archivage dévoyés constituent sa boîte à outils. maya s'est jointe à la Faculté des beaux-arts de l'Université Concordia en septembre 2017 à titre de professeure adjointe au Département d'histoire de l'art et est maintenant basée au Département d'arts plastiques. Elle détient un doctorat en sciences humaines et études culturelles de l'Université de Londres, une maîtrise du Royal College of Art et beaucoup de fleurs.
