Join us for a captivating and informative event for International Women in Math Day as we celebrate the life and work of Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman and Iranian to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal.
About the film
Filmed in Canada, Iran, and the United States, "Secrets of the Surface: The Mathematical Vision of Maryam Mirzakhani" by George Csicsery highlights Mirzakhani's journey from an Iranian immigrant to receiving the Fields Medal in 2014. The documentary showcases the impact of her achievements through insights shared by her colleagues from around the world, former teachers, classmates, and students in Iran. The film's animated sequences help explain Mirzakhani's mathematical work, making it an ideal educational tool for young girls interested in science and mathematics.
Mirzakhani's birthday, May 12, was chosen to be International Women in Mathematics Day. To highlight this theme, the screening of the film will be followed by a panel discussion with women mathematicians and statisticians of different backgrounds and career levels. Panelists include: Saeedeh Nasrin Jamali (MSc student, Concordia), Dominique Maldague (Postdoctoral Fellow, MIT), Lea Popovic (Professor, Concordia), and Vasilisa Shramchenko (Professor, Sherbrooke).
