The Convergence initiative was born of the idea of making neuroscientific research accessible through forms of art. Both fields ask questions about the world we live in, and when unified create links and expand the understanding of the seemingly separate fields. The interdisciplinary approach aims to aid the process of communicating research to a wider audience. Convergence does this by supporting programs and activities, engaging in partnerships with other institutions and organizations, hosting conferences, exhibitions and workshops, as well as facilitating research, discussion, and the transmission of knowledge.

This year, fine arts students were invited to participate in the third iteration of the Special Topics Convergence I: Arts+Neuroscience in the Fall semester and Convergence II in the Winter semester hosted at the Department of Design and Computational Arts. The course allows students to creatively explore the intersections of arts, neuroscience, and society, as well as how these domains shape the understanding of ourselves and others.

During this debate, groups of students from the Convergence class will discuss contemporary debates pertinent to the field of ‘artscience’. Group 1 will explore if science fiction is an inspiration of misinformation, while Group 2 will explore the ethical constraints of scientific research in light of previous unethical behaviour of scientists.
