Applied AI Institute, the program on Leadership in Environmental and Digital innovation for Sustainability (LEADS) and Sustainability in the Digital Age are pleased to  invite you to a panel discussion exploring the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Sustainability. This panel will explore approaches to sustainability and AI from a range of perspectives, considering how AI technologies can be instrumentalized to respond to and mitigate climate change and environmental impacts, the potentials of slow AI development, and the value of Indigenous epistemologies within AI development.

The panel discussion will be followed by a postering session, showcasing graduate research on AI and sustainability! To submit your research, apply here.

Speakers

Ceyda Yolgormez 

Ceyda Yolgormez is Postdoctoral Researcher at the Concordia Indigenous Futures Research Cluster, working in the Abundant Intelligences Research Program. She will introduce Abundant Intelligences and consider how Indigenous epistemologies can inform sustainable AI development.

Martin Deron

Martin Deron is a research advisor at Université de Montréal, a PhD student at Concordia and the coordinator of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research on Time, Technology, and Capitalism (CIRTTC). He will speak on the role of AI and digital technologies in the transition to a post-growth society.

Mélisande Teng 

Mélisande Teng is a PhD student at Université de Montréal/Mila (Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute) working on applications of machine learning for biodiversity conservation and to tackle climate change. She will present her work on AI for biodiversity monitoring, from the perspective of an AI researcher collaborating with ecologists. 

Alex Hernandez-Garcia

Alex Hernandez-Garcia is an assistant professor at the Université de Montréal at DIRO and at Mila (Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute). His current work focuses on machine learning research methods that can facilitate scientific discoveries to tackle the climate crisis and health challenges. He will discuss the importance of assessing the environmental impact of artificial intelligence. 

Andréa Ventimiglia 

Andréa Ventimiglia is Knowledge Mobilization Manager at Sustainability in the Digital Age & the Future Earth Canada Hub. Her expertise crosses science communication, fundraising, and evaluation of research impact. She's worked for over a decade to support evidence-informed policy and action. Andréa is excited to be moderating the panel discussion.
