For this lab walk through sub-series, 4th Space partnered with 3 current courses, led by Rebecca Duclos, Juan Ortiz Apuy, and Alice Jarry to allow their students, who are variously engaging in critical materiality, to have access to these visits with researchers live. Cecilia McKinnon, an intermedia artist and curator, is acting as our facilitator and interviewer for this series, and has gathered questions submitted by students from these courses.
In this iteration, we are meeting with two students currently working in the Ziter Urban Landscape Ecology Lab, (Dr. Carly Ziter's lab). The first is Mathieu Johnson, who is an undergraduate with Science College working on a pilot project using a mobile (bicycle-mounted) sensor system to study the effects of tree cover and diversity on urban heat, with a study area around Loyola Campus. The second is Bella Richmond, a PhD student who is tackling similar questions about the benefits of the urban forest, but at much broader scales (across multiple cities).
