The Concordia University Innovation Lab is hosting an open lunch on Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Materialities. Our guest speakers will engage in a discussion that crosses engineering, fine arts and social sciences. As a society, we have never been so concerned with the need to improve the efficiency of our products, of the built environment at the same time as caring for our planet. Our four guest speakers will discuss materials, membranes and coatings through various practices including research programs, exhibits, sustainable entrepreneurship projects and community practice.

Join this exciting conversation by registering for the Zoom webinar or watching live on 4TH SPACE's YouTube channel.

You can also attend this discussion in person. Please note there is a maximum of 25 audience members permitted in the space.

Do you have questions on this topic that you want to get to our experts ahead of time? Send them to innovation.lab@concordia.ca.

Guest Speakers

Dr. Alice Jarry holds the Concordia University Research Chair in Critical Practices in Materials and Materiality. She is the Director of the Speculative Life Cluster Biolab at the Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture, and Technology, a member of the Canada Excellence Research Chair Cluster in Next Generation Cities and an Assistant Professor, Design & Computation Arts at Concordia University. She will discuss art-science methods possibilities and challenges across different projects. She will also discuss how she conceptualizes membranes and filtration and how she integrates them across her research.

Dr. Keroles Riad is a former Public Scholar at Concordia University where he received a Ph.D. degree from the individualized program developing new materials for 3D printing. He is the CEO of enuf, a spin-off of the “Waste Not, Want Not” student initiative he started at Concordia University for which he received the Quebec Lieutenant-Governor Youth Medal. For the past six years, his small team of students at Concordia University has made a positive institutional change on an issue as big as the waste crisis. Through enuf, Keroles and his team are working to prove that a student initiative can scale and have a tangible impact at a national scale.

Elnazsadat Ale Ebrahim is a Ph.D. candidate, Thermal Spray and Multiphase Flow Lab. She joined the Thermal Spray and Surface Engineering Research Center at Concordia University as a Master's student and has demonstrated, for the first time, that the Suspension Plasma Spray (SPS) process can be used as a new method to engineer photocatalytic filtration ceramic membrane characteristics. She will discuss employing an SPS process to engineer innovative coatings. This includes design and optimization of various porous microstructures with the potential application in water and air filtration, and the development of antiviral coatings to mitigate the transmission of viral infections such as Covid-19 through highly touched surfaces.

Don Undeen is currently a first-year M.Des. student, with a research focus on makerspaces, speculative design, and friendly objects. Prior to coming to Concordia, Don built and ran the Maker Hub at Georgetown University, and taught creative technology courses at the graduate and undergraduate level. Prior to that, Don built and ran the MediaLab, a creative tech incubator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. He will discuss his experience developing a repository of materials for upcycling as part of the work of the Maker Hub at Georgetown University.
