Career Trends & Shifts: How Students' Perspectives and Employers' Approaches Are Changing

The experience of the last two years has had a major impact on the characteristics, aspirations, and expectations of today's university students. Shifts that were already taking place were accelerated by the experience of the pandemic as well as the social justice movement. At the same time, the job market saw a huge drop followed by a remarkable recovery. And of course, the workplace isn't what it used to be. The shift to virtual has not only changed the workplace, but also how employers attract and hire talent on campus.

This presentation will focus on the most recent research into students' attitudes and expectations to provide a clear profile of the next generation of workers in Canada. It will also examine how employers have responded to these changes: how they are hiring now; what they are anticipating for the year ahead; and, what support they expect from their campus partners when it comes to hiring tomorrow's workforce.

Graham Donald is one of North America’s leading experts on attracting, recruiting, and engaging students and graduates. He founded Brainstorm Strategy Group in 2003 where he supports major employers and post-secondary institutions’ success through research, training, and strategic consulting. His clients include KPMG, PwC, University of Toronto, Deloitte, GE, McGill University, HSBC, UBC, and many others. He was Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Career Educators and Employers (CACEE) and the founder of Canada’s first job board for students, Campus WorkLink. He has also held leadership roles at Workopolis, Simply Hired, and Day Communications.

Mr. Donald hosts and speaks at numerous conferences across the US and Canada annually, including the Campus Recruiting Forum, the Career Leadership Academy and the Future Workforce Conference, among others. He received both his BA and MBA from the University of Toronto.
