STAIN Lab presents a workshop and discussion on ethical harvesting and solar dyeing. This will be an introductory workshop about foraging and natural dyeing. Participants will learn about different local dyeing plants and food waste that can be used to dye a variety of fibres. Basic concepts related to natural dyeing will be discussed, like scouring, mordanting, and overdyeing. Participants are encouraged to bring their own large glass jar (1 litre or more) and dyeing plants they would like to experiment with or share (goldenrod, marigolds, cosmos, dahlias,…)

This hands-on workshop will encourage conversations surrounding our complex and diverse experiences of space and nature, while considering how to harvest materials respectfully

The STAIN (Sustainable Tinctorial Art in Nature) Lab is a multi-platform educational tool for artists aiming to foster a culture of sustainability within Concordia and eventually to the greater Montreal artistic community. In the form of hands-on workshops and presentations given by trained Fine Arts students, the STAIN lab challenges, experiments, discusses and disseminates methodologies on how to grow, collect, harvest, and transform plants and natural materials into usable art supplies. The lab takes the form of an adaptable cart on wheels, a treasure chest harboring an ever-growing archive of sustainable dyes, pigments, plant samples, and experiments.
