Painting with microbes
Using a combination of functional genomics, metabolic engineering and synthetic biology techniques, the Martin Lab studies microbes normally found in the environment. This allows them to engineer novel alternatives to existing chemical and material products that are cleaner, better and cheaper. The demonstration will begin by learning about engineering yeast and bacteria, followed by a hands-on activity of ‘painting’ onto plates using colored yeast and fluorescent bacteria liquid cultures.

Lab-on-a-Chip Technology
Microfluidics has been touted as a means to miniaturize biology and chemistry on tiny, hand-held devices. The Shih laboratory specializes in combining microfluidics and synthetic biology to solve major challenges in the health and energy sectors. In this demo, we will test the drinkability of lake water using paper microfluidics, a simple yet powerful tool for quick testing (similar to the way rapid COVID-19 or pregnancy tests work).
