Conflict is an inevitable part of working in community towards creating the new futures we want. When conflict arises, our responses to it often perpetuate the very cultures of punishment, separation and exclusion at the root of what we want to transform. Join us to learn alongside three speakers who accompany individuals, groups and communities in moving towards connection, accountability, repair and transformation in response to conflict and harm.

This event is held in person, at the SHIFT space (step free access, accessible washroom). If, for accessibility reasons, you are not able to join in person but would like to attend the event, please contact Emma Harake, our Space Coordinator and we will work together to see if an alternative solution is possible. A week’s notice will give us the best chance of making something work.

Our speakers

Gabriela Gomez is a healing practitioner, researcher and facilitator who holds a Master’s in Educational Psychology and is a certified Somatic Experiencing Practitioner. Her training has taken place largely in community settings, and she currently runs her own practice as a somatic counselor and consultant.

Dominic Barter is internationally recognized in the field of community responses to conflict. Since the 1990s he has been studying how communities, government and organizations can reorient social systems to meet common needs.

Philippe Koffi is an accredited mediator, certified trainer, and negotiator. He has over ten years' experience in psychosocial intervention, facilitation and coaching. He coordinates various projects at the Chalet Kent youth centre in Côte des Neiges, and sits on the boards of two community organizations.

As part of our mandate to facilitate collaboration across difference, SHIFT has been integrating principles of shared power into our decision making structures since we opened in 2019. Over the year to come, the SHIFT Governance Hub will be developing approaches to accompany us in responding to conflict in ways that align with our values.
