Join us for two exciting lectures by scientists who are leading their fields and Gairdner Foundation Award recipients: Pascal Mayer, 2024 winner of the Canada Gairdner International Award, and Bonnie L. Bassler, 2023 winner of the Canada Gairdner International Award.

From next generation sequencing to next generation therapeutics: Simplicity as a paradigm for scientific disruption.

Dr. Pascal Mayer, a French biochemist, has revolutionized the way we sequence DNA. His work has made it faster and easier to read the genetic DNA blueprint of organisms, which is crucial for advances in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology. Mayer’s innovations have helped scientists better understand many facets of life, from human diseases to the biodiversity of the world.

Quorum Sensing Across Domains: From Viruses to Bacteria to Eukaryotes.

Dr. Bonnie L. Bassler, a pioneering American molecular biologist, has transformed our understanding of how bacteria communicate with each other. By uncovering the “language” of bacteria, her research has opened up new possibilities for fighting infections, creating antibiotics, and even tackling antibiotic resistance. Her discoveries provide us with insight into how microbes interact within our bodies and the environment, offering new avenues for medical and scientific progress.
