From research, professionals in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences have been demonstrating for several decades the beneficial effects of physical activity in different population groups by implementing exercise programs in a systematic way (i.e., programmed according to the responses and recovery needs), and integrating an individualized design of the intensity of the effort to be made.
In this talk, I will discuss the results of different studies carried out by the Department of Physical Education and Sports at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) on people with chronic pathologies and/or cardiovascular risk factors in collaboration with other public and private entities
Sara Maldonado Martin is a full professor in the Department of Physical Education and Sports at the university of the Basque Country (Spain).
She received her PhD (2000) and degree (1992) in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), specialist in Management in Sports Entities (1993, UPV/EHU), Master in High Performance in Sports (1997, Universidad Autónoma, Madrid, Spain), specialist in exercise training in Cardiac Rehabilitation (2008, British Association of Cardiac Rehabilitation) and accredited by European Association for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015).
Teaching in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences degree: Design of exercise for people with pathologies and Nutrition for Health. Teaching in postgraduate Official Masters. Director of the University Postgraduated Degree in Exercise and Healthy Lifestyle (UPV/EHU).
Research stays: Center for Functional Assessment and Sports Medicine of the Servei d'Esports of the University of Barcelona, Spain (1997), Gloucestershire University (2005, 2006, 2014, UK), Wake Forest University (2004, 2005, 2010, 2016, USA), and University of Illinois (2022, Chicago, USA).
Research projects and scientific publications related to the effect of exercise in people with different pathologies (obesity, arterial hypertension, myocardial infarction, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, treatment-resistant depression). Principal investigator of the UPV/EHU group called GIKAFIT (Gizartea, Kirola eta Ariketa Fisikoa Ikerkuntza Taldea/ Society, Sport and Exercise Research Group).
She belongs to the editorial panel of Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention.
