The Irish border and the Irish landscape
Following a successful run of two accelerated summer courses in 2018, the School of Irish Studies is once again offering a pair of for-credit courses this year.
First up, The Irish Economy and the European Union, running from May 14 – June 18. Visiting professor Paul Gorecki will tackle the place of Ireland in the European Union.
“We like to stay on the cutting edge, and this topic is more relevant now than ever, with the issue of Brexit on everyone’s minds,” says School principal Michael Kenneally. “Students will have the opportunity to learn about how economic growth and changes to things like taxation policy will affect Ireland now and in the years to come.”
The next course, Contemporary Landscapes, Literatures and Cultures, runs from July 2 – August 1. The course, taught by professor Nessa Cronin, will look at how the Irish landscape and sense of identity can be examined through such varied lenses as Irish literature and climate change.
“Students will have the opportunity to learn from a wide variety of texts, some of which has been translated from the original Irish,” says Kenneally.
“Following the success of last year, it was clear that interest in more summer offerings was increasing, so we are delighted to be returning again this year. We are especially pleased that these courses are so relevant to today’s headlines.”
“As with all courses and activities i Irish Studies, these courses hold broad appeal to students from all disciplines. We hope that they will enable new audiences to become acquainted with our School, and to consider a Major in Irish Studies.”
