Amal Elsana-Alhjooj (McGill University)
Co-Executive Director of NISPED
Founding Director of AJEEC
The Negev region comprises half of the State of Israel. About 30% of the Negev’s residents – approximately 200,000 people, are Arab Bedouin. Of those, some 60,000 people live in so-called “unrecognized village” – communities that do not receive services from the State. The Arab Bedouin represent the poorest population in Israel but also, one of the populations with the greatest potential.
Ms. Elsana-Alhjooj is one of the key shapers of public opinion regarding the status of the Arab minority and the status of women in Israel. She is a member of the Prime Minister’s Commission for Economic Development of the Arab Sector; a member of the Steering Committee of Shutafut-Sharaka; a member of the professional committee of the Employment Creation Division of the JDC.
Her talk will focus on social and community development issues, such as, voluntarism model and work to promote Jewish-Bedouin cooperation. She will discuss land issues and the future of the Negev’s development.
