Israel at 70: Past, present and future essay winners


To mark the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the modern state of Israel, the Azrieli Institute of Israel Studies hosted a research essay competition on the theme of “Israel at 70: Past, Present, and Future”. The competition was open to students enrolled in a university degree program at any post-secondary institution in Montreal.  The winners were announced at the Institute’s conference on July 3rd, Israel at 70.

The undergraduate winner was Eden Moalem.  She is currently at Concordia University student with a major in Judaic Studies from the Religions and Cultures department.  Her winning essay was titled: “Getting the Feminist Foot into Zionism’s Door:  Jewish Women’s Journey in Israel.”

The graduate winner was Matt Malone.  He is currently a student in the Faculty of Law at McGill University.  His winner essay was titled: “Israel’s Liberal Democracy and the Litmus Test LGBT Politics.”
