Insurgent Love: Abolition and Domestic Homicide by Ardath Whynacht

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in Society and Culture (CISSC) is home to the PhD in Humanities program. A graduate of the program, Ardath Whynacht, has earned the 2022 Atlantic Book Award for Scholarly Writing for her book " Insurgent Love: Abolition and Domestic Homicide."

Whynacht is associate professor in the Department of Sociology at Mount Allison University and credits the PhD Humanities program at CISSC with providing her with the support to think critically across disciplines.

"I was able to hold onto my history as a poet and bring that into my scholarly work," says Whynacht. "I can't think of another program that would have supported me in this way."

She says her book was selected because it wove criminology, social theory and creative writing together. She hopes her story will serve as an example to prospective students that an interdisciplinary pathway is a rewarding one.
