The Concordia University Institute for Canadian Jewish Studies announces a lecture by Professor Sharon Delmendo, St. John Fisher College, Rochester, New York.

“An Open Door: Holocaust Haven in the Philippines”

The lecture outlines how the unique political structure of the Philippine Commonwealth (1935-1946) allowed Commonwealth President Manuel Quezon, US High Commissioner Paul McNutt, members of Manila’s Jewish community, and Jewish relief organizations in the US, Germany, and the Philippines to provide refuge for more than 1300 Jews fleeing the Holocaust.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 11 at 12:00 NOON in the Religions and Cultures Department Seminar Room (R-103, 2050 McKay Street, Metro: Guy-Concordia). Light refreshments will be served.

Dr. Delmendo has two books on Jewish refugees in the Philippines forthcoming from De La Salle University Press (Manila, Philippines). “When the Time of Need Came”: Manuel Quezon and Holocaust Haven in the Philippines is an analysis of Commonwealth President Manuel Quezon’s efforts on behalf of Jewish refugees. In Time of Need, an Open Door: Holocaust Haven in the Philippines is a more broadly based history. When these books are published, she will complete another book project: Pacific Theater, a study of Hollywood-produced WWII films set in the Philippines, made while the war was ongoing.
