Postdoctoral Research Associate Léa Clermont-Dion was recently invited by La Presse to offer her thoughts on a topic of her choice. The result was a reflection on an online seminar she is taking with acclaimed American philosopher Noam Chomsky, author of Manufacturing Consent, which Clermont-Dion says had a profound impact on her young self.
The seminar, Consequences of Capitalism, given in collaboration with Marxist geographer Marv Waterstone, will last two and half months and involves regular in-depth readings, as well as reviewing documentaries. Clermont-Dion looks forward to asking them the two intellectuals about how the echo chambers of social media networks contribute to the manufacture of consent, a theme she finds missing from their recent analyses. She believes that the resulting increase in polarization and radicalization reinforces dominant worldviews.
