Thursday, January 25, 2024, Dr. Lourdes Ortega (Georgetown University) joined the Plurilingual Lab’s Speaker Series to discuss the role of social justice in SLA education in a talk entitled What’s the “Multi/Plural Turn” in SLA Got to do with Social Justice?
The session took place on Zoom and was attended by over 120 participants, with a good discussion following the presentation. Ortega’s work argues that injustice in language education stems from the perception that proficiency in a language grants the right to speak and the power to dictate meanings. Ortega advocates for translanguaging/translingualism as a pedagogical approach that acknowledges the psycholinguistic realities of multilinguals. Additionally, she stresses the importance of recognizing diverse forms of English and other languages and prioritizing language use for social transformation and self-empowerment.
The Plurilingual Lab is a research laboratory in the Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE) at McGill University and is directed by CSLP member Angelica Galante. Its Speaker Series is sponsored by the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance, and co-organized by the BILD Research Group and McGill's Department of Integrated Studies in Education (DISE).
The recording of Dr. Ortega’s talk will soon be posted the Lab’s YouTube channel.
