Kahnawà:ke Mohawk author, researcher, and activist Dr. Taiaiake Alfred joined the CSLP Speaker Series on January 25, 2024 to discuss the themes and messages of his new book by University of Toronto Press, It’s All About the Land: Collected Talks and Interviews on Indigenous Resurgence.
The concept of Indigenous resurgence has been the focus on Alfred’s recent work and one that he returned to throughout his engaging presentation, which appeared to strike an optimistic note despite the many obstacles and challenges faced by First Nations in Canada.
Alfred also discussed different Indigenous ways of teaching and learning he has encountered and worked into his understanding of “education” from the various communities and contexts of his academic and professional life, as well as the challenges that researchers and activists can face when trying to bridge differences between Indigenous communities around the world.
For over 25 years Taiaiake Alfred worked in academia in Canada, founding Concordia’s Centre for Native Education and the University of Victoria’s Indigenous Governance Program. He now works directly with Indigenous nations, Kahnawà:ke especially, to pursue renewed visions of self-determination.
The recording of the Zoom session from the Speaker Series event is now available through the CSLP’s YouTube channel.
