CSLP members Bruce Maxwell and David Waddington, along with co-author Mathilde Senécal, have published a new guide for dealing with sensitive issues within the classroom. Maxwell was recently on radio CIBL 101,5 to discuss Pedagogical Freedom and Dealing with Controversial Issues in Schools: A Guide for Teachers and School Leaders.
The guide aims to equip educators and school administrators with evidence-based insights to assist them in making informed decisions when addressing politically and socially contentious topics in the classroom. It begins by defining pedagogical freedom for primary and secondary school teachers and clarifying its distinction from academic freedom and then outlines four legal principles that outline the appropriate and prudent exercise of pedagogical freedom, with examples provided. The final section discusses the professional expectation of teacher neutrality or impartiality when handling controversial subjects in class. It offers guidelines grounded in both research and legal precedent to aid educators and school leaders in navigating decision-making.
