Monday, June 3, 2024, colleagues from CSLP member Catherine Fichten’s Adaptech Research Network, held a series of talks on the theme of Accessibility Through Technology at the 2024 edition of the SALTISE conference.
Presenting for the Adaptech team were Alice Havel (Dawson College) and Susie Wileman (Dawson College, Concordia). In the first presentation, A Pocketful of Tools: Mobile Solutions to Bring to the Internship, the two discussed findings from a project that investigated the use of assistive technologies and accessibility features by students participating in internships in clinical settings. The second presentation, Making PowerPoint, Excel, Google Docs and Teams More Accessible to Your Students, was led by Roberta Thomson (McGill University) and showcased a series of instructional videos prepared by Adaptech to train faculty how to make use of the accessibility features of several common applications (Word, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.).
The two presentations bookended a third, The Impact of Marginalization and Intersectionality on Post-Secondary Students with Disabilities’ Use of Assistive Technology: A Scoping Review of the Literature, which was offered by David Pickup, Information Specialist & Communications Officer of the CSLP, who represented the CSLP Systematic Review Team. Mr. Pickup reported on the team’s work with Dr. Fichten on a SSHRC Knowledge Synthesis grant that explored and scoped the literature on the impact of privilege, marginalization, and intersectionality on assistive technology (AT) use among post-secondary students with disabilities.
The resource videos showcased at SALTISE are available through Adaptech’s YouTube channel.
