Monday, August 12, 2024, the CSLP will host a workshop organized by Mitch McLarnon (Department of Education, Concordia University) that will explore the methodology of Institutional Ethnography (IE).
IE examines the social relationships that shape daily life by focusing on how people interact within various social institutions, such as schools, marriages, and workplaces. The qualitative research method explores how social interactions within institutions shape everyday life. It focuses on these interactions in their institutional contexts, rather than specific organizations or sectors.
The official abstract for the workshop reads:
“This workshop will explore the ongoing role of institutional ethnography (IE) as a method of inquiry to investigate complex and urgent social issues. This space will provide opportunities for those interested in IE to better understand its application at any stage of their work, with a focus on supporting students and early career scholars to build confidence with the approach. In particular, the workshop will introduce a broad understanding of Dorothy Smith's work, and provide space for scholars across academic, community, and activist spaces to interrogate an often-lingering question: Is my work IE enough to be IE? The afternoon will be spent digging into the "how" of IE, and collectively discussing the different ways of organizing, analyzing, representing and mobilizing data in our work.”
Participants, with 50+ expected to attend, will start their day at the CSLP before heading over to Concordia’s 4th Space for the keynote address before returning to the Centre for lunch and breakout group discussions.
