On September 27, 2024, a new series sponsored by the CSLP and organized by graduate students, will launch with a roundtable discussion on the topic of race in the field of education. Theorised Identities aims to tackle each of several categories of identity (race, class, gender) in a series of dedicated roundtable discussions, prominently highlighting the discussants’ lived experiences.
Theories around race, class, and gender will be compiled, and personal experiences will be narrated to close the gap between the researchers and the researched. Throughout these discussions, one question is paramount: What role do these three categories play in our understanding as educators or in forming and representing our identities?
The discussants will examine the different categories as researchers and minoritized subjects. The first session will discuss the race category; the second session (on December 20, 2024) will evolve around questions concerning the class category; and lastly, the closing session (on February 21, 2025) will critically reflect on the gender category.
The roundtables will feature Keenan Daniel Manning (PhD student, Department of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia), Ian Klaus-Springer (PhD candidate, Educational Studies, Concordia University), and Samira Karim (PhD student, Educational Technology, Concordia University) as participants and will be mediated by Neslihan Sriram-Uzundal (PhD student, Educational Studies, Concordia University).
