November 28, 2024, the CSLP and its satellite CEAP UQAM office will co-host a conference on the discourse around toxic masculinity and its reception by young people. Ressacs : comprendre les discours masculinistes après le mouvement #MeToo will take place at UQAM in the J.-A. DeSève Pavillion (room DS-R340) from 16:00 to 17:00 and is capped at 60 places, so be sure to register your attendance.
The conference (in French) will feature a presentation by award-winning filmmaker, founder of On S’écoute, and CSLP Research Associate, Léa Clermont-Dion, with Bruce Maxwell (Associate Professor in the Department of Administration and Foundations of Education at Université de Montréal) acting as respondent.
Lea Clermont-Dion will present a theorical framework to better understand the evolution of masculinist discourses and their impact among young people, who perpetuate certain aspects of toxic masculinity, particularly in the context of the post-Me Too era on social networks. Drawing on empirical analyses, her research explores the social and argumentative dynamics that foster the growing popularity of these discourses on digital platforms. At the same time, she will discuss the main findings of recent research, which highlight specific trends and predominant modes of thought within these online communities. Finally, she will present a research project in development to address this constantly changing phenomenon, while inviting a critical analysis of the effects of this rise in masculinist discourse in our contemporary societies.
