The latest episode of the Probantes en pratiques podcast (series in French only) was released in early December, with a focus on highlighting the issue of classroom management practices and dealing with problematic behavior by students.
The podcast, created by Eric Dion and other CSLP researchers as a special project in 2023, aims to bring current credible research evidence to practitioners. This episode features Isabelle Plante discussing the recent published findings of Okonofua et al. (2022) in A scalable empathic-mindset intervention reduces group disparities in school suspensions.
The authors employed an "empathic-mindset intervention" to refocus middle school teachers (n=66) on "understanding and valuing the perspectives of students and on sustaining positive relationships even when students misbehave." The intervention cut suspension rates, especially for Black and Hispanic students, reducing the racial disparity from 10.6 to 5.9 percentage points (45%). Improvements persisted into the next year with different teachers, showing that empathic treatment by one teacher can positively impact students' school trajectories.
