The Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) is thrilled to welcome Dr. Maria-Lourdes Lira-Gonzales, a professor at Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue, as its newest member. Dr. Lira-Gonzales specializes in technology-enhanced second language learning, with a focus on artificial intelligence and digital platforms in language instruction.
Her current research explores how ChatGPT can support both learners and educators. One project examines how English as a second language (ESL) students engage with AI-assisted text revision, while a collaborative study with CSLP co-Director Diane Querrien investigates ChatGPT’s role in helping French as a second language teachers provide corrective feedback.
Beyond AI, Dr. Lira-Gonzales has explored the impact of platforms like Moodle, Flip, and Facebook on second language writing instruction. Her forthcoming book chapter, Peer Feedback on Essay Writing Through Moodle Forums (University of Michigan Press), reflects her commitment to bridging research and classroom practice.
A core focus of her work is corrective feedback in second language acquisition. In collaboration with Dr. Antonella Valeo, she has examined how learner and contextual factors shape engagement with written corrective feedback in a Francisation program in Quebec. Expanding on this, she is now exploring the effects of mindfulness meditation on language anxiety and engagement with feedback, with a pilot study already completed at CEGEP Saint-Jérôme and further research pending an Insight Development Grant.
We look forward to the insights and contributions Dr. Lira-Gonzales will bring to the CSLP.
