On April 3, the Centre for the Study of Learning and Performance (CSLP) was pleased to host the final session of the Department of Education’s Works in Progress Sessions (WIPS x Concordia), capping off the initiative’s successful inaugural year. The series concluded with a compelling presentation by Dr. Mitch McLarnon, Associate Professor in Concordia’s Department of Education and a member of the CSLP.
Dr. McLarnon’s talk, titled “Composting, Zero Waste and Climate Action in Montreal Schools,” drew from his ongoing community-based research in environmental education. He explored how sustainability efforts in urban schools—particularly around waste reduction and climate action—intersect with broader questions of social and environmental justice. A central theme of the presentation focused on the challenge of engaging a wide range of stakeholders—students, teachers, administrators, and community members—who often bring divergent priorities and perspectives. Dr. McLarnon connected this challenge to his work in institutional ethnography, offering insights into how competing institutional structures can shape, and sometimes constrain, grassroots sustainability efforts.
The talk sparked a rich and engaging discussion among attendees, who included faculty, graduate students, and community members.
The CSLP was pleased to provide space for this important initiative. WIPS x Concordia has offered a collegial and informal setting for researchers to share work in progress and to exchange ideas across areas of expertise. The CSLP congratulates Dr. Casey Burkholder, series organizer, and all of this year’s presenters on a successful first year.
