Contemporary developments in disease surveillance—particularly those that are meant to leverage big data and social-media infrastructures for ‘participatory surveillance’—promise to revolutionize the production of knowledge about the spread of infectious disease. Yet these digital developments also potentially transform the configuration of public health problems, raising questions about optimal modes of public health organization and priority setting. In this presentation, I offer a preliminary consideration of emergent modes of participatory disease surveillance. I use an analytic framework developed in French and Mykhalovskiy (2013) to present an overview of select touchstones for research into participatory disease surveillance. I conclude with a discussion of what I take to be some of the wider implications of participatory disease surveillance.
