What's the math teacher's favorite dessert?

Pi.

Bad jokes aside, in an engaging celebration of International Day of Mathematics, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Concordia University hosted a special Pi Day event that attracted over 40 students, faculty, and math enthusiasts.

The event, hosted in collaboration with the Concordia University student chapter of the Association for Women in Mathematics, highlighting the community's inclusive spirit. For more information regarding the Concordia AWM chapter, contact them directly, or follow on Instagram.

Graduate student, Samaneh Sami Kermani

This year’s festivities kicked off with an interesting presentation about Unsolved Problems in Mathematics by Samaneh Sami Kermani, one of the Department’s Phd students and AWM Student Chapter executives. The presentation was designed for a general audience.

Following the presentation, a new event was launched, a Pi Day themed Trivia competition.  Four teams comprised of undergraduate and graduate students as well as professors competed for the honor of being Pi Day Trivia champions. The winning group, also known as the Pie Eaters, was comprised of Devang Agarwal, Eric Daigle, Michael Weinzierl and professors Simone Brugiapaglia and Nadia Lafrenière.

Congratulations to all participants for a lively game filled with challenging questions and lots of laughs. Thanks to everyone who joined in making this Pi Day a memorable one. The blend of fun and academia has set a high bar for the celebrations to come. We’re looking forward to Pi Day 2026!
