CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
Project: Using drones during humanitarian crises
The Montreal Institute for Genocide and Human Rights Studies at Concordia University is currently looking for one or two students to conduct research for a new project on the use of drones and UVAs during humanitarian emergencies. This is a joint project with the Observatoire Canadien sur les crises et l’aide humanitaire/Canadian Research Institute on Humanitarian Crises and Aid (OCCAH)
New technologies are changing the world and the humanitarian sector is no exception. The use of “unmanned aerial vehicle” (UAVs) or drones for humanitarian purposes is drawing media attention but there is also considerable reluctance to use these new technologies in humanitarian contexts. While some see the potential to get accurate data that would improve the decisional process and the efficiency of humanitarian operations, others fear ethical and legal implications.
Aim of the project
- Make a comprehensive assessment of the use of new technologies in general, and drones in particular, by humanitarian actors (government, United Nations and NGOs)
- Understand the real impact of the use of drones during humanitarian operations
- Determine the needs of humanitarian actors and their operational practices
- Recognize the potential and the limits of the use of drones by humanitarian operators
- Help develop new practices that take into account the operational realities and the ethical and operational challenges of the use of drones by humanitarian actors
MIGS is looking for Masters or Phd students who have conducted research on the ethical and legal implications of new technologies and drones in particular. The student has an understanding of the humanitarian sector.
Aspiring students can send their CV and letter of interest at migs@concordia.ca.
Students should also be fluent in English and French
